A mother sits at home in Brooklyn wishing she were able to be at the wedding of her only son which is taking place on Paradise Island n the Bahamas.  Meanwhile, at the same time, the couple stands beneath the radiant Caribbean sun preparing to take their wedding vows.  The groom’s mother closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and sends her love out into the universe and to her son and his new wife.  At precisely 4:04 PM the mother plays the haunting music of Danny Boy, a song with special meaning to her and her son, in her home in Brooklyn.  Without any prior knowledge of his mother’s intentions, the groom instructs the band to play Danny Boy as a backdrop to the I do’s.  Danny Boy begins to play at exactly 4:04 PM on Paradise Island.  Neither the groom nor his mother had planned or even discussed their mutual decision to play Danny Boy.  Coincidence or the power of intention?

The parents of a very sick five-year-old boy are shown an x-ray of their son’s abdomen.  The x-ray clearly indicates that the child has some sort of blockage in his intestine.  “This blockage”, the doctor informs, “Requires surgical intervention in order to correct it.”  The boy is admitted to the hospital at 1:00 AM.  The surgery is schedule for 6:00 AM.  The boy’s mother gets into bed, holds her child close and begins to pray over and over again, “please God make him well.”  When the surgeon enters the boy’s hospital room at about 5:30 AM the child is awake and sweaty from his fever having broken, but he is otherwise well and asking to eat because he is starving!  Coincidence or the power of prayer?

Are these two incidents mere coincidences or are they more than that?  Could it be that some sort of metaphysical phenomenon is responsible for these as well as many other seemingly extraordinary events?

Although the word metaphysics stirs up thoughts of the supernatural in a ghostly and almost eerie circumstance to the minds of many people, the word very simply and literally means the study of something beyond what is physical.  Meta (after; beyond) and physics (study of the physical).  “Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy.  It deals with the underlying, fundamental nature and principles of a system, the universe for instance” (www.geocities.com).  Some of the greatest philosophers known to man have discussed metaphysical phenomenon in such a way that its existence connotes an opportunity for a concrete understanding of our relation to the universe and to the universal intelligence some of us believe to be God.

Philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle wrote about the existence of this abstruse philosophical science centuries before Jesus walked the earth.  In Aristotle’s treatise on the subject he defined the study of metaphysics as simply “the works after the physical works.”  Plato expressed his understanding of metaphysics to be the “effort to think things together – not in isolation and abstraction, but in relation to one another and as parts or aspects of one concrete whole.”  A more contemporary philosopher, Baron Christian Wolff (1679 to 1754), was quoted as stating that metaphysics is “the science of all that is possible, so far as it is possible” (Baldwin, J).

Although most people’s religious beliefs are held very close to their hearts and are not usually something others are privy to explore, these beliefs are usually the person’s or a society’s desire to understand the meaning of life by connecting with God, a force seen as greater than themselves.  The very word religion means, “to connect with the source” (Parker, J).  Therefore, might metaphysics be the scientific principle that constitutes how “miracles”, which are described in all the major religion’s holy books, could have occurred?  Jesus himself said of the many “miracles” he performed, “you could do the same and even greater” (Mark 6:45).  He understood that our planet and all the life forms on it are only a small part of the universe and that by reaching beyond this dimension and connecting with other dimensions (the God source) we might create “miracles” as well.

There are several types of metaphysical phenomena that are now being explored.  Some of these are: transmutation, meditation, prayer, visualization and controlled breathing.  All of these allow for a deeper connection with God because they allow one to align with the same energy frequency as the universe itself.

For example, if one were to quiet the mind and repeat their intention, “I wish for world peace” over and over they would be contributing to the achievement of world peace by using transmutation.  Another way to tap into the universal consciousness by using metaphysical practices is through mediation.  All of the world’s greatest religious leaders taught of the need to quiet the mind and reach other dimensions by going to that place where we can access our highest self; the self that is connected on an energy level to the God consciousness and where anything required to improve the quality of life on planet Earth is available.  Jesus did this when he taught his disciples to “be still and know that I am God” (Mark 6:45).

The field of metaphysics opens us up to the possibility that we are an autogenic (originating or derived from sources within the same individual) part of the universe.  Perhaps the cybernetic discoveries of the 1990’s were not only intended to enhance our lives with technological breakthroughs like Internet access as well as many other sophisticated computer programs, but also to enrich our lives with evidence that seems to support that we are interconnected with each other, the planet and the entire universe as well.

By being open to the study of metaphysics a person might be on their way to changing the quality of their own life as well as the condition of the whole planet.
